Title: Carpe Diem
Author: Sai
Series: TNG
Part: 1/1
Code(s): P/C, Jack, Walker
Rating: G
Summary: 200 word challenge - and 'cause we need more stories posted
here

"What a load of..." Jack spluttered as he noisily set his beer glass
down. "You haven't got an impetuous bone in your body! You think -
overthink! - every decision you make! You never just act! "

Jean-Luc sipped at his own glass, shaking his head. "Hardly," he
murmured as he felt the pulse of his artificial heart testifying to
the consequences of a reckless moment.

Jack knew well the source of his friend's reluctance - but after a
long - and very dry - deep space mission, the two real beers he had
just consumed got the better of him.

"Damn it, Johnny, it was one mistake - but you survived! That should
prove that you can let go of the reins once in a while. Loosen up -
and let fate take the helm for once!"

Bristling at the remark, Picard glared at Jack - then let his breath
out in a rush. "Fine, then. I will. Miss Howard," he said, turning his
gaze to Jack's companion, "would you care to dance?"

Surprised, Beverly hesitated - then smiled. "Delighted," she said,
rising to follow him to the bar's dance floor.

Walker Keel sighed. "Bad move, Jack. Bad move."

Does a mere 200 words REALLY count as a "story". ;-)

I'm not even sure if it qualifies as a FlasFic but like most good
flashfic it relies for its success on the readers existing background
knowledge to place it within a larger framework. In this case my
background knowledge wasn't strong enough to grab all the nuances
without checking Memory Alpha but it was still rewarding none the
less, giving me a pleasant surprise when I realised where it slotted
into the "big picture". I feel that a dedicated Picard/Beverly fan
would get even more out of it, which would make it a success.

Back in the day there used to be enough 'stuff' posted here where we
had categories for drabbles, challenges and the like (though 200 words
would be... what? A double drabble?)

Given the paucity of writing here lately, we're just trying to 'prime
the pump' and get things moving again.

I like it.
The unruffled Picard calculates his next impetuous move, and Jack
likely gets crushed out of history, as this timeline departs from
canon.
Fans of the pairing are likely going, "Sweet."
