I've always been a sucker for Valentines Day! This is a development of
a story from 2004 which I wrote as part of a larger fan club fiction.
It takes place on board the USS Magellan, which is en route to find
and neutralise a killer virus. On the way they rescue the crew and
passengers of a freighter which is being attacked by Klingons and
amongst the refugees is Kaye McPherson, a Betazoid, and her son Angel.
Kaye agrees to stand in as a nurse on the Magellan to help. Kaye is my
wife's middle name and she is a McPherson by birth. I suspect she
might be a Betazoid as well since I'm pretty sure she can read my
mind.

What little fan fiction I write these days ussually ends up on the

Valentines Day

Kaye McPherson arrived for her shift at Sick Bay 15 minutes early.
This was no surprise since she was always fifteen minutes early. She
actually looked forward to her work as senior nurse - a position she
had held in Starfleet before she married. It is funny how your life
can come full circle sometimes.

First stop was the replicator. “Cafe Late, unsweetened.” she said.
Reaching in she picked up the glass of hot, frothy coffee, cradling it
in her hands and sniffing appreciatively. Floating over to the Nurses
station on a cloud of mocha, she thought how good it was to be on a
ship with civilised replicators. The replicators on the Churchill, the
freighter she and Angel had been traveling to Cygnus Alpha three on,
had been reasonable for a ship of her class but had nowhere near the
range of choice of a Nebula class such as this.

When she got to the Nurses station she was not surprised to find it
empty - the nurse she was relieving would be finishing her rounds - so
she settled into one of the seats to wait for her. What she was
surprised to see was an elegant glass vase with a single champagne
coloured rose.

How beautiful, she thought. Probably Doctor Dalbys', she often got the
hydroponics vats to grow her flowers to surprise her patients. When
she bent to take a closer look, however, she noticed a PADD beside it
with “For Nurse McPherson” on it in bold letters. Curious, she picked
it up and tapped the “continue” button below the screen.

“In the tradition of St. Valentines' Day I send my heart. From one who
would be more than a friend.”

Now, Kaye McPherson was a mature, respectable forty year old widow
with a fifteen year old son ... but right now she was blushing like a
fifteen year old! As a Betazoid, an empath, she was able to read
peoples emotions, which meant she was very seldom surprised by men but
she had to admit she was surprised by this though!

“Bon Jour, Kaye! Ready for a busy day?” Doctor Dalby had walked in as
she had been admiring the rose. “What a beautiful rose! Is it yours?”

Kaye spun around, for some reason hiding the PADD behind her back.
“Good morning Dr. Dalby.”

“Please, Kaye, unless it's business, call me Marina. May I?” Picking
up the rose she inhaled its' perfume. “Magnifique! It reminds me so
much of the gardens in Toronto! Aha! I can see the hand of Commander
Dowling in this. Beware, mon cher, that nice old man may be head of
hydroponics but he is also something of a ladies man.”

The doctor was in a jovial happy mood this morning and would have
delved further if nurse Alya Lorr had not come in at that moment so
that they could start the shift handover. During her mid-day break
Kaye decided to go down to the Science department to see if she could
find out where the message had come from.

A PADD - Personal Access Display Device - could be used for many
things. It was a portable computer in its' own right, able to store
and analyse information, but it could also be used as an input/output
device for the ships main computer - in an extreme case it could even
be used to pilot the ship! She knew the basics of what it was and what
it did but in this case she needed an expert to trace the message and
luckily she knew exactly who to ask, J'Keln Merrys, a young Bajoran
she had struck up an acquaintance with.

On her way there she considered all the men she knew who might have
sent it to her. She assumed it was a man - it would have surprised her
but not shocked her if it wasn't. The problem was that, as a Betazoid,
she could easily sense the emotions of those around her and she had
not felt any real groundswell of affection. The occasional lustful
glance it was true but that did not match the message, which she
thought was old fashioned and sweet. Wistfully, she remembered the
Valentines she had exchanged with Alex, her late husband.

Perhaps it was another Betazoid or someone with similar psychic
powers? The only Betazoid male she knew on the ship was Tellyk Than,
the handsome new A & A officer and although he was pleasant he had
never ... well, shown any interest. Had he been cloaking his emotions?
Suddenly the corridor seemed to be much warmer.

Or perhaps it was someone who could control their emotions? There were
quite a few Vulcans on board but, whilst they were able to control
their emotions it was not a temporary thing - they never let them have
free reign ... unless they were in Pon Farr and that was strictly
regulated by the authorities. There was that strange Klingon though
who she had heard had been brought up on Vulcan, Lt. Kirok ... but she
had only met him a couple of times during which he had been polite but
restrained.

When she got to the Science department J'Keln was working on an
engineering assessment. ”Merrys! Have you got a moment?”

“Oh! Hi Kaye! Are you ok? You look flushed.”

Kaye tried to look surprised, touching her cheek.“Really? Perhaps I'm
coming down with something?” She tried to sound off-hand but it came
out as a flustered warble, “I have a little job for you ...”

Twenty minutes later, J'Keln gave up. “I can narrow it down to two
people but no further ... “

Behind her back, Kaye crossed her fingers and chanted
don'tletitbethem, don'tletitbethem ...

“ ... Tellyk Than and my very own mentor, the crazy Klingon himself!”

It was them.

Why did life have to be so complicated? She sighed. “Thanks, Merrys.
I'll talk to you tomorrow”. J'Keln watched as her friend left through
the door before bursting into peels of laughter

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ten minutes later she returned and she was not happy! Kaye McPherson
stormed into the Science lab, marched straight up to J'keln and
started dressing her down! “Of all the dishonest, disrespectful,
immature pranks! How dare you set me up like that! Have you any idea
how embarrassing that might have been if I had spoken to either Tellyk
or Kirok about this? ”
J'Keln had retreated to put a console between herself and Kaye, as if
she were afraid she were about to be attacked. “I, I .. don't know
what you mean!”
“For someone who is supposed to be so smart you can make some really
dumb mistakes! Never laugh at a Betazoid behind their back, J'Keln - I
could sense your amusement at my expense clear through into the
corridor! It didn't take me long to find a Bio-Med Lab nearby and run
a DNA check on the PADD itself..” She waved the PADD menacingly at
J'Keln. “The only people to handle this PADD since it was replicated
this morning are me and you!”
She paused for a moment and looked critically at the Bajoran "You must
have way too much time on your hands. Perhaps I should talk to Lt.
Kirok …"
"NO!" There was a look of panic on her face, probably because she
guessed what the reaction would be of a Klingon who had found out he
had been tricked into a menage a trois!
"Then tell me, why did you do it?" Kayes' anger, fueled as it was by
embarrassment, was still hot but she sensed that J'Keln's contrition
was real.
J'Keln looked embarrassed and a little sheepish as she babbled her
apology. "I'm sorry. We used to celebrate Valentines Day on Deep Space
Nine and I always thought it was really cute. Kaye, you're such a nice
person, it seemed a shame that you were alone and I can see right
through that fake Vulcan thing that Kirok puts on. He's a royal pain
when he starts lecturing but he really cares about people and he can
be good company." She caught the sceptical look on Kayes' face "He
can!" She insisted.
"… and Tellyk Than?" asked Kaye.
J'Kelns' face looked impish. "Well, he is a bit of a hunk isn't he?”
she giggled.
Kaye had to smile at the Bajoran girls' infectious humour. Perhaps it
was true. She loved Angel but it had been ages since she had enjoyed
some adult company. She tried to look stern, to tell her off, but
instead found herself laughing as well.
"Perhaps!" She touched her lightly on the arm. "Merrys, I'll let it go
this once but no more matchmaking, right?" J'keln nodded
enthusiastically.
As Kaye was leaving she caught the floral perfume of the rose and
stopped at the door.
"Well, thanks for the flower any way." She called back.
"The rose?" J'Kelns' voice sounded genuinely perplexed. "That's not
from me. I wouldn't even know where to start to get one!"
Kaye looked at the young Bajoran suspiciously, was this another trick?
No, she didn't need her Betazoid senses to see that she was truly
surprised. Merrys' eyes were wide and her hand had shot up to cover
the tiny "oh!" that was escaping from her lips! Was there a secret
admirer after all?
Kaye half sternly shook the rose in J'Kelns' direction. "One word
about this gets out and … and … I'll set Kirok on you!"
They both burst out laughing gayly.
When she got back to her quarters at the end of her shift, she was
greeted at the door by Angel. "Pretty rose, Mum, where'd you get it?"
She smiled enigmatically as she kissed her son on the cheek then put
her arm around his shoulder as they walked into the room.
"I've been thinking... You know. I should get out more often! Would
you mind amusing yourself this evening?"
See that's what happens when you cheat off of the smart girls sitting
next to you in class. LOL! We will admit to being a little confused
when we saw the subject line of your post. ;-)
Don't worry about it. We've all had that moment after hitting the
send button when we notice a mistake and remember that there is no
edit function on the newsgroups.
This is a sweet Valentines Day story and we enjoyed it.
Warmest Wishes,
I'm glad you liked it. It was definately a "Mary Sue" in that it co-
starred my daughter, Jacqueline's fan persona and a cameo by my son
who was in primary school at the time and wanted to be called Angel
Dragonspawn! We had fun on the Magellan and if I ever we go to Quebec
I will definately be trying to meet some of the people we only ever
met online.
